About Jayne

Jayne Wright
Jayne is a ceramic artist and musician from Yorkshire, who is now living in Margate (Kent). She works in stoneware and porcelain. Her ideas are often generated by her interests, passions and obsessions.
Jayne enjoys taking on ambitious projects which have significant community involvement. In 2022 she created the Mermaid Army a collection of ceramic sculptures of open water swimmers. Jayne made her popular linocut hand made tiles using her sketches of the swimmers.
Jayne is the founder of JAW Ceramics CIC.
The Mermaid Army

The Sculptures
The Mermaid Army is a collection of hand built stoneware sculptures representing the diversity of People Who Swim, celebrating and promoting why they swim and where they swim. The collection was exhibited in Westbrook, Bridlington, Cliftonville, Ramsgate, Weston-Super-Mare and at Turner Contemporary Margate. It was also featured on the BBC South East News.

The Plaques
Using the drawings and studies of the Mermaid Army swimmers, Jayne Wright created the interactive ceramic plaques to be exhibited alongside the sculptures. People were invited to write comments that may have been made about their bodies on the plaques. The plaques are currently touring with Words Matter, This Ends Now.
Tiles

The tiles began as an accompaniment to the Mermaid Army, using the drawings and studies of the swimmers. The tiles then documented where people swim and iconic landmarks. The collection of 125 tile designs now includes cyclists, cats, dogs, wrestlers, pole dancers, iconic ice creams, flowers, horoscopes and turner paintings.
Each stoneware tile is uniquely made using a clay printing process using linocuts and then hand painted with oxides and underglazes, the glazed using a once-fired technique.
Tiles have been used in bathrooms, kitchens, gardens and framed as pictures.
